The family includes mostly medium-sized or small species, usually yellow, sometimes grey or black. Some species have spotted or clouded wings. The main diagnostic features are crossed postocellar setae, vibrissal setae absent, wing with costa not interrupted, tibiae with dorsal preapical setae. The larvae usually develop in decaying leaves, where they can sometimes form tubes. Others species develop in birds' nests. Adults fly in forest-meadow ecotones, along forest roads, and around streams, but they prefer moist and shaded places.

Altogether 157 species are known to occur in Europe and adjacent areas according to the Fauna Europaea (Merz 2005). 75 are listed in the present checklist (66 in Bohemia, 69 in Moravia and 65 in Slovakia). Since the last version of the checklist, the number of species in the Czech Republic has increased by 2 (4 in Bohemia, 3 in Moravia), but in Slovakia the number of species has remained unchanged. Merz (2003) has divided Homoneura interstincta (Fallén, 1820) into two species (H. mediospinosa and H. interstincta). The occurrence of H. interstincta in the Czech Republic and Slovakia is probable, but specimens determined before 2003 need revision. The species richness of the lauxaniid fauna is well known in the Czech Republic and Slovakia thanks to the work of the late Doc. Ing. Vladislav Martinek CSc.

The monograph by Shatalkin (2000) can be used for the identification of the fauna of the Czech Republic. More recent information on the genera Homoneura and Minettia has been published by Merz (2003, 2004).

The author wishes to thank Dr. Bernhard Merz (Geneva, Switzerland) for invaluable information on lauxaniid taxonomy and distribution.
