This family includes relatively large species,
characterised by their somewhat aberrant wing venation (Sc1
atrophied distally, ending freely in the wing membrane) and the
proximally narrowed abdomen. The larvae are terrestrial or aquatic,
phytophagous, living freely among mosses or on herbaceous plants and
not in a substrate like those of other Tipulomorpha. Except for
Cylindrotoma distinctissima, adults may be considered local and
rare, but sometimes they may be fairly common, resting on vegetation
or flying slowly around.
Eight species-group
taxa are known to occur in Europe (Oosterbroek
2009). Four species are listed in the present checklist: four from
the Czech Republic (four in both Bohemia and Moravia) and three from
Slovakia. There have been no additions or corrections since the
PCV2, except that subspecies category
is not shown here for Cylindrotoma distinctissima and
Diogma glabrata. No additional species are to be expected from
Central Europe.
The most comprehensive monograph of the
Palaearctic Cylindrotomidae, with keys to species, is that by Peus (1952).
The European species of the family were keyed by Starý (1984).
Since the four Czech and Slovak species represent separate,
well-established genera, they can be identified by all older keys,
including that by Slípka and Starý (1977).
The nomenclature of the checklist is adopted from Oosterbroek (2009);
as mentioned above, subspecies category is not shown since only
nominotypical subspecies are involved.
