The family Empididae includes species that vary in size from 2 mm in length to very large species with a strong, robust body, almost 12 mm long. However, not only their size but also their general appearance and biology are very diverse, and the family includes both small, raptorial, aquatic forms (Clinocerinae, Hemerodromiinae) and larger-sized, both raptorial and nectar-feeding species (Empidinae). Many flower-visiting species are raptorial only during their mating activity, exhibiting a special epigamic behaviour in which males transfer a prey (usually another insect) to females in large aerial aggregations which take the form of very characteristic species-specific swarms. The mouthparts, wing venation, but especially the structure of the male genitalia, are the most important diagnostic features. The Empididae are listed here in the restricted form within the superfamily Empidoidea, as has been generally accepted since 1983 (Chvála 1983, Collins & Wiegmann 2002).

Based on the 2004 on-line version of the Fauna Europaea (where the fauna of the Caucasus was excluded), 816 species of the family Empididae are known to occur in Europe; 348 species are listed in the present checklist and, compared with PCV2, 28 of these species are additions: 33 species are recorded for the first time from the Czech Republic and 24 from Slovakia. The family Empididae has been intensively studied in the Czech Republic and Slovakia for many years, and this is one of the best-known areas of Europe for this family. The present increase in the number of species may be attributed to the very recent studies of the genus Hilara Chvála 1999a, b, c, 2000, 2001a, b, 2002a, b, 2004, 2005a, b), and the intensive field investigations in southern Moravia (altogether 32 new records!), in the Pálava Biosphere Reserve (Chvála 1998), and the Podyjí (basin of the River Dyje) National Park (Barták et al. 2006). Several new records on the genus Rhamphomyia were published by Barták (2004a, b, 2007).

The present checklist includes 34 species, with 295 recorded from the Czech Republic (263 in Bohemia, 220 in Moravia) and 26 from Slovakia.
